Can Google's DeepMind streamline healthcare?
What are they actually doing with the patient data? Is leveraging big data the future of medical advances? How is technology disrupting healthcare?
Will GDPR legislative changes increase consumer trust over how their personal data is used and stored? What does your social data say about your personality and future? 🤔
Data sharing
Google's DeepMind signed a new five year data-sharing partnership with the NHS, which includes sharing the patient data of over 1.6 million Londoners. 🏥 DeepMind is planning to launch the Streams app in early 2017 - which will streamline patient data so any health professional can easily access your medical history, and its AI will track patterns to flag early warning signs of kidney injury. 🤖
This deal raises privacy concerns over whether DeepMind will be able to diligently protect patient's privacy whilst the data is being shared across networks. 🤔 Although Google says that patient data is encrypted and will only be used by DeepMind, critics argue that there is no real way of knowing what they are actually doing with the data.
When the initial controversial data-sharing deal was announced earlier this year, an investigation by the ICO was launched due to the secrecy around the broad scope of data to be shared by the NHS. It is currently unclear how the new partnership differs from the original leaked contract. 📃
But is leveraging big data the future of medical advances? Is openly sharing our medical history the price for curing diseases? ⚖ By 2020, "the amount of health-related data gathered will double every 73 days", but strict privacy regulations pose restrictions on how this data can be used and shared. How can healthcare providers share patient data whilst protecting privacy? 🤔
MW Homecare's very lengthy but WORTHWHILE infographic visualises how technology is disrupting the healthcare industry, and in particular highlights the collation of accurate and complete medical datasets amongst the biggest challenges for the sector. 💉
Data protection
More than 130,000 US Navy sailors' personal data was "compromised" in October. 🌊 When GDPR comes into action in May 2018, data breaches will need to be reported to the ICO WITHIN 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach "if there is a risk to the data subject". ✅ Hopefully this legislative change and increased communication will positively effect consumer trust over how companies handle personal data.
Nick Ismail emphasises the importance of companies taking pre-emptive actions now to prepare for GDPR, by implementing "a comprehensive and accountable data security strategy". 🙄 Ismail argues that being hacked is somewhat inevitable, so you NEED to be prepared to prove you have done everything "to mitigate the damage of the breach". 😇
